History

The Cocoa Beach Pier was originally built in 1962. Literally stretching out 800 feet over the Atlantic Ocean, the Pier is constructed of over 2 ½ miles of boardwalk planks. The 270 pilings used to support the Pier measure 40 ft in length and are driven a minimum of 15’ into the ocean bed. Every year there is substantial work done to the pilings to maintain their structural integrity.

Over the years the image and appearance of the historical landmark has changed many times. Long-time locals can reminisce of the days in the early 1960’s when visitors could drive their cars right up onto the Pier itself. In the early 1970’s the Pier was also home to a dance club called Asylum whose big attraction was the cosmic lighted dance floor. Since the beginning, the Cocoa Beach Pier has been a favorite of both locals and tourists.

In 1983 a two million dollar remolding and expansion of the Cocoa Beach Pier began. The opening of the Pier House Restaurant (now the Atlantic Ocean Grille) was our pride and joy. It has been awarded the “Best in Brevard” and “Best Restaurant with a View” for numerous years by Florida Today Newspaper readers. The restaurant adheres to a tradition of excellent service and great food paired with a unique ambiance and panoramic ocean views. We are proud to say there is no other establishment like ours, on the East Coast of the United States. Toss in the thrill of watching a shuttle launch for the Cocoa Beach Pier and you have just one more unforgettable experience for this historical landmark.

The Pier is home to five bars, four restaurants, shops, an ice cream parlor and arcade. We also have beach rentals and volleyball courts. Whether your pleasure is fishing, volleyball, shopping, sunning swimming, surfing, dining, or just hanging out, the Cocoa Beach Pier has been the place to do all these things and more since 1962. The Pier is open 365 days a year and is staffed with more than 150 employees. A million guests visit the Pier each year.

The Cocoa Beach Pier hosts several special events each year like the Annual Easter Surfing Festival, which has been going on for over forty years, and Beach Fest. These are large events that bring spectators to our beaches for competitive sports and music. The Pier also sponsors a “Concert on the Beach” series where we bring big name acts like the Beach Boys in concert with the ocean and beach as part of the concert arena.

In 2014, David Siegel, CEO of Westgate Resorts and his long-time business associate Jim Gissy purchased the pier from the original owners, The Stottler Family. Mr. Siegel & Mr. Gissy, both men with strong ties to the Central Florida region, look forward to continuing and enhancing the wonderful traditions of the Cocoa Beach Pier.
